This poem, written by Janet Newman, is about a group of musicians hiking to a remote location to do a photoshoot. The author sets an atmosphere using a series of two line phrases, which adds aditional meaning towards the amount of words used throughout the poem.

Within the first 14 lines, she uses a themed series of verbs to create a deeper feeling of dread. “Instruments safely sheathed” in this one sentence the author has created an image in your head of the instruments sheathed. “safely sheathed” is a term usually used for swords and daggers, and illiterates a sharp piercing sound which implies the musicians are on some sort of military operation. This is also a subtle language feature because she wrote “safely sheathed”, as opposed to just saying ‘sheathed’. This means that the instruments are safe, but if you further analyze the text after this where she says “Past the tree line into the brittle alpine terrain and relentless wind”, she opposes that claim of the safety of the instruments, because the scenery described seeming somewhat hostile towards the out of place musicals. This thorough description represents both sides and perspectives, which can be seen as an oxymoron.
